Sugar Sea

Sunset Strip

SUGAR SEA is the ex-Mezzanine, ex-El Divino Sunset Bar, though it now bares little comparison to those previous eras, having gone through a spectacular metamorphosis. From its former creepy-crawly state it has been amazingly transformed, re-emerging like a beautiful butterfly - all delicate canopies, cool airy lighting, comfortable silky seating and an entirely refreshing attitude. A new sandy beach has been added over the rocks that surround the lower wooden jetty which projects out from the front towards the sea (incidentally, a distinctive viewpoint). Instantly vying with the Del Mar for the 'best looking bar' accolade, Sugar Sea has reinvented the location as a 'funky cocktail and tapas bar', a place bathed in a refreshing orchid and ice blue hue. The place doesn't intend to go down the club pre-party road, like so many others in San An, it wants to establish a reputation for quality based purely on its own merits. Be happy to loosen up with a slightly more 'alternative' funky set. In fact 'alternative' is the buzzword.
It's certainly aiming to appeal to dance-centric types who don't especially feel the need to have full-on club sounds being banged out at them everywhere they go on the island. And yet they might still enjoy hanging out in this exciting and action-packed area. The new bar looks to be a great place for couples too, a romantic environment for those who are NOT on the nightly 'pull'. Sugar Sea is intended as a complement to the rest of the bars, not a rival. It definitely enhances the whole Sunset Strip experience, bringing a bit of the quality and maturity back for later in the night, the hours beyond the Sunset peak.
Employee Julie sums its attraction up: 'After being at Bar M for three years I now get to see a 'proper' sunset every night, hear the coolest ambient funkiness played and deal with lovely, lovely customers. It's a fantastic place to work.'
